The forecast period should be long enough for the company to reach a steady state. Price-to-Earnings (P/E) ratios can help for mature public companies, but they are sensitive to capital structure and accounting choices.
Trailing multiples use actual recent performance, which makes them easy to verify but backward-looking. Forward multiples reflect expected performance, which can be more relevant when growth or margin expansion is changing the business. Adjusted multiples remove non-recurring items, owner-specific expenses, and accounting distortions. When you present the valuation, show which multiple you used, what financial number sits underneath it, and why it fits the company’s stage.

A valuation that can’t survive a sensitivity test is too fragile for decision-making. Build a sensitivity table around the inputs that move value most: revenue growth, EBITDA margin, WACC, terminal growth, exit multiple, capital spending, and working capital. You don’t need dozens of model switches. You need a clean view of which assumptions matter and where the valuation range breaks.
Scenario analysis gives decision-makers a more useful answer than false precision. A base case should reflect the most supportable operating plan. A downside case should reflect slower growth, margin pressure, or higher reinvestment needs. An upside case should be earned through specific operating drivers, not a blanket boost to revenue and terminal value.
Three Common Input Mistakes Even Experienced Analysts Make
The first mistake is using market averages without checking fit. A broad industry EBITDA multiple may include companies with different scale, margins, growth, and risk. That average can be a starting point, but it shouldn’t become the conclusion. Filter the data until the remaining peer set answers a simple question: would a buyer view these businesses as real alternatives?
The second mistake is treating terminal value as an afterthought. If terminal value accounts for much of the result, then the terminal assumptions deserve as much review as the explicit forecast. The third mistake is mixing enterprise value and equity value inputs. If you apply an enterprise multiple to an equity earnings measure, or discount levered cash flow using WACC, the model will look clean and still be wrong.
